...brilliant, what are they? Welsh. That IS a selling point--how many Welsh indie-rock bands do you know? We know this because the title track International Velvet is a noisy thanksgiving that proclaims "Everyday I wake up, I thank the Lord I'm Welsh." The other verses go, "Deffrwch Cymry cysglyd gwlad y g,n" --which could be an elaboration on said religio-nationalistic gratitude, or, you know, something else altogether. Either way, the Welsh group is bent on going international, and in that velveteen, strangely alien way that European groups have of taking over...

...nothing tops a velvet Elvis painting in terms of bizarre music-star folk art, but this is pretty good. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of HANK WILLIAMS' birth and the release of The Complete Hank Williams CD set, Mercury Records amassed a collection of folk art depicting the guitarist-singer. The exhibition includes such pieces as Lonesome Hank, above, painted on a rusty lawn chair, and Setting the Woods on Fire, below, both by Bob Gray; and Dark Hank, middle, by Todd Greene. ...song Siouxsie and the Banshees had covered in the past. The second encore was the high-light of the evening. Siouxsie at her best sang as Cale strummed an electric viola for a stunning performance of "Venus in Furs," a song from the legendary 1967 album The Velvet Underground and Nico. Though originally Lou Reed had sung the lyrics, Sioux's appropriation of the words, "shiny shiny, shiny boots of leather," lent the song a sexy feminine air, which perfectly complemented Cale's viola and the band's performance as the spotlights bounced their golden drops from Siouxsie's vinyl...
