Bridges suffers more than Close from this unlikely casting. He never lets us see more of Jack than a blunt and sometimes disconcertingly manipulative veneer, as if he were rather uncomfortable with the role of an accused murderer. This suppression of identity in some ways adds to the suspense of the movie. Bridges lets us know so little of Jack's true motives and feelings that we cannot decide with certainty his guilt or innocence. At the same time, however, by not being generous with his character, Bridges tends to cut off our sympathy for Jack, and even to make...
Kremlin watchers caution, however, that underneath their new veneer, most Soviet bureaucrats are the same old dogmatic apparatchiks. Propaganda within the U.S.S.R. is just as shrill and paranoid as ever. Reagan is sometimes & likened to Hitler by news organs. One wall poster currently displayed in Moscow shows a grim image of a U.S. monster threatening to rain down bombs from outer space. Overseas, disinformation remains a favorite tactic; the Kremlin rarely overlooks an opportunity to plant a false rumor. While grieving last week over the death of Samantha Smith, the American girl who visited the U.S.S.R. on a peace mission...
...more important, the Bitburg episode cut deep into the veneer of postwar friendships. Commented Rome's La Repubblica: "The effect has been diametrically opposite to what Reagan and also Kohl had anticipated, leading to the resurgence of old tensions." Up to a point, however, such dredgings can serve as useful reminders of grievances below the surface. Invoking the spirit of West Germany's first postwar Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung editorialized: "You cannot have both good Germans in the alliance and bad Germans as a standard of depravity. That would not only split West Germany but also deprive...
...might be a gruff old gent with a streak of eccentricity and a taste for adventure, while the other is younger, more level-headed and a bit uptight. Or if one is an overenthusiastic amateur, the other is a world-weary pro with a hard veneer of cynicism. They seem to bicker constantly, these mismatched TV couples, yet they share a grudging respect and affection--sometimes even a wedding ring. They can be found all over the prime-time dial these days, their names often linked by racy ampersands: Simon & Simon, Hardcastle & McCormick, Kate & Allie, Cagney & Lacey, MacGruder & Loud...
...legislative ballots counted, about 63% had gone to the Sandinistas and the front's presidential candidate, Daniel Ortega Saavedra, 38. The early results also appeared to guarantee a substantial smattering of representation in a new 90-seat National Assembly for the six other parties on the ballot. The veneer of pluralism, however, will be thin. Four of the parties in the race, including the Sandinistas, were Marxist-Leninist in orientation. Of the three non-Communist parties, one, the Independent Liberals, remained on the ballot even though the party leadership had tried to withdraw from the race, charging that...
