Halfway through his long day's journey into night, and day again, Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) launches into a rant against New York: "F___ you and this city and everyone in it!" He spreads his venom ecumenically--to the Pakistani cab drivers and the black schoolyard studs and the Soprano wannabes in Bensonhurst, and to the Irish-American boyos of whom Monty is one. It's a swell swill of gutter poetry--written by novelist-screenwriter David Benioff and vigorously illustrated in a tabloid-surrealist style by director Spike Lee--that touches on everything New Yorkers, and Americans, love...
...Modi's message is that India, Hindus and Gujarat are all under attack. The persecutors? Terrorists, criminals, all Pakistanis (and President Pervez Musharraf in particular, whom Modi declares to be his true electoral opponent), Osama bin Laden, intellectuals, the media, "pseudo secularists," communists and cow killers. He reserves particular venom for Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born widow of assassinated Premier Rajiv Gandhi. ...resignation. MEANWHILE Arachnophobia Britain's largest supermarket chain, Tesco, had a hairy problem on its hands after six women found Black Widow spiders in grapes. While the chain does allow predators to protect organic fruit from pests, Tesco said its suppliers don't deliberately use Black Widows, whose venom is 15 times deadlier than a rattlesnake...

But part of the problem is that it's easier to protest, to hurl venom at practices you don't like, than to find new ways to do business and create change. The dogma of traditional green activism--that business (and economic growth) is the enemy, that financial markets can't be trusted, that compromise means failure--has done little to save the planet. Which means it's fair to ask the question: Have some of the greens' tactics actually made things worse...
...bitten, there are new guidelines for what to do. Don't cut the wound open and suck the venom out. You could contaminate the injury or damage blood vessels and nerves. Doctors also advise against applying a tourniquet or using ice on the wound. Instead, have someone hustle you to the nearest hospital. Keep the bitten part of the body immobilized and below heart level, and remove all rings, watches and tight clothing. If you have the wherewithal, take note of the time of the bite and what the snake looked like...
