Geysers are caused when water plugs a vent from the earth's hot interior to the surface. The interior heat boils the deep water, which at first cannot escape because of the weight of the water higher up in the hole. A moment arrives when steam pressure is enough to lift all the water out of the hole. At that moment practically all the pent water suddenly changes to steam.
