...laconically: "I wish I could do a roll on my way in." (Later he explained that he had restrained himself because "if I'd goofed, it would have looked kind of sour.") Testing his controls with a wide, lazy-S turn, Crossfield, following procedure, jettisoned the X-15's ventral tailfin, which would have interfered with extending his tail landing skids. He zeroed in on the lake bed, cutting his air speed from 285 m.p.h. to 185 with three nose-up "porpoising" maneuvers. The X-15 touched effortlessly onto the lake bed, slid 4,600 ft. to a dust-raising...
Another striking result from our FMRI experiment concerned activity in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a central part of the reward circuitry of the brain. This result was what I was looking for. As you know, I had hypothesized that romantic love is associated with elevated levels of dopamine or norepinephrine. The VTA is a mother lode for dopamine-making cells. With their tentacle-like axons, these nerve cells distribute dopamine to many brain regions, including the caudate nucleus. And as this sprinkler system sends dopamine to various parts of the brain, it produces focused attention as well as fierce...

Peering through a microscope and guided by an electric probe, we were able to distinguish between the two groups of nerve roots leaving the spinal cord. The ventral roots send information to the muscle; the dorsal roots send information back to the spinal cord. The dorsal roots cause spasticity, and if just the right ones are severed, the symptoms can be greatly reduced...
...team, including Weiger, then tested this hypothesis by applying the substances to cells in the ventral nerve cord, and opposing postures were in fact generated...
