Although he was cleared by a Moscow court in 1900, the state seized his railways, and he was financially ruined. However, Mamontov held onto Abramtsevo, and he died and was buried there in 1918. Bandini (Colin Farrell) is a writer who knows his subject--L.A.--but needs characters to animate it. That doesn't take long: strong-willed women keep showing up unbidden in his room, removing their clothes, tangling him in their sad fates.
