...stage and one too many perorations from the newly misanthropic Timon, is clearly unsuitable for a student production. To this problem, director Matt Hudson found the simplest solution: he cut. The cast was reduced to about half its prescribed size, Timon's speeches were shortened or eliminated and the verbal exchanges between characters were reduced to the bare minimum. This aides comprehension, and the production is an effective digest of the original Timon, retaining all the original pathos in significantly fewer words...

...verbal comic, Allen was the fastest gun in the business, and a true heir to Groucho Marx for his inventiveness with language, constantly pirouetting around the tired cliché or the pretentious phrase. Yet he had an infallible internal censor that kept his wisecracks from ever being cheap, or risqué, or mean. He kept a police whistle at his desk, which he'd blow whenever a line or bit of business crossed the line. He remained old-fashioned that way, as well as in his stubborn refusal, unlike Carson and almost everyone that followed, to do "savers" when...

Bush's blueprint is the Margaret H. Cone Head Start Center in Dallas, where kindergartners' verbal scores rocketed 20% on standardized exams after the center adopted a language-centered curriculum. But this formula, slowly set in motion by a 1998 federal law, could be difficult to clone nationwide: average per pupil spending for Head Start is slightly more than $5,000, vs. more than $7,000 at the corporate-backed Cone Center. Even if Congress okays the move from HHS to the Education Department (President Jimmy Carter tried--and failed--to do the same), the change of responsibility will...

...obligatory first question to pass Sunday talk-show hosts' lips, but whenever it did, brother Jeb was there to field it with an appropriate verbal shrug. Yes, there were Democratic squawks from the likes of Bob Kerrey and Carl Levin, wondering why a man so audibly enamored of bipartisanship had been so quick to jerk a chin toward the Gore campaign as an orchestrator of the leak. But if the Republicans protested a little too much (Arlen Specter, we're looking at you and your post-election "hunch"), George W. still has the same slender edge in the national polls...

Brown says the inspiration for her latest work is the ill-defined and enigmatic intersection of consciousness and the verbalization of consciousness. Her paintings physically illustrate this juxtaposition by representing the elements of conscious experience on separate pieces of canvas, which are then attached to form the final product. With the exception of one painting, each work uses a panel of scrawled words and letters to illustrate the verbal thoughts running through Brown's head as she comes into contact with the painting's subject. Coupled with the swirling, monochromatic blend of color on the other panels, the effect...
