Tropical dry forests differ from rain forests in that their precipitation is seasonal. During the rainy period, the landscape is verdant, but during the five to six months of the year that are rainless (early December to mid-May in Costa Rica), many trees lose their leaves. Unlike the temperate zone's deciduous hardwood forests, however, they do not become fully dormant. Instead, the bare trees flower and bear fruit, which nourishes a variety of mammals and insects. Centuries ago, such vegetation covered 60% of the forest regions of Latin America, India, Southeast Asia, Africa and northern Australia...
Even if such charges are not--or were not--valid, none among the interplanetary array of alums and luminaries who will gather in Quincentenary Theater should leave thinking that Harvard Yard is some verdant oasis of veritas. There is something important to be learned from this week's gala affair, especially as it comes on the heels of the even larger Statue of Liberty 250th birthday celebration...
...ugly scourge of old was drought and dust storms that tore the earth apart. And it is again this summer in the South. Yet that is temporary. The more menacing scourge is verdant bounty as far as the eye can see in the nation's midsection and diminishing markets for the rich harvests. Dan Rather and his combat jacket have long ago left the hogpens to report on other worldly terrors, like the wedding of Andy and Fergie. Hollywood's Jessica Lange and Country are wilted memories. Farm foreclosures are too common to rate as pop drama any longer...
...miles -- from the Pacific Ocean, across the rugged coastal mountains, the hot sands of the Sonoran Desert, the high plains near El Paso and finally the verdant citrus fields that end at the Gulf of Mexico -- the largely unmarked frontier is as much a link between the U.S. and Mexico as a barrier. The movement across the boundary is massive. Each year there are hundreds of millions of legal crossings. In addition, 1,056,907 undocumented aliens were seized along the border in 1984, almost a 50% increase over ten years ago, and authorities cannot even estimate the number...
Some 40 miles east of Tripoli, a complex of white stone buildings sparkles in the sunlight. Beyond the main entrance a courtyard opens onto a verdant Mediterranean garden. One of the surrounding walls is decorated with a brightly colored, stylized representation of Mendeleev's periodic table, the catalog of the elements. The attractive complex, however, is neither a jet- setter's hideaway nor a university campus. An inscription within the periodic table proclaims, "The Revolution Forever!" and outside the gate soldiers mount guard. Welcome to Libya's Tajura Nuclear Research Center...
