Vogueing pranced a step or two nearer the mainstream last week. The houses of Extravaganza and Magnifique, among others, strutted their stuff at the venerable Roseland Ballroom for a show sponsored by the Design Industries Foundation for AIDS. Among the crowd present: the Talking Heads' David Byrne, actress Gwen Verdon and real fashion model Iman. Said the evening's master of ceremonies, David Ian Extravaganza: "I never thought I'd see the day when we'd be doing this downtown." Well, no; but, then again, don't dance off to California either, David. Vogueing has not yet arrived...

...Tony Award, for Bob Fosse's explosive choreography, yet it ran 18 months on the strength of its likability and slickness. Those are still the show's virtues, and when coupled with a tireless effort by TV Star Debbie Allen (Fame) in the title role originated by Gwen Verdon, they seem to be enough for another long run. The opening won nearly unanimous praise, and by the weekend the box office had tallied a $1 million advance sale...

...beens. So their transformation into rakehells is both joyous and poignant. It is delicious to watch Ameche, 77, Cronyn, 73, and Brimley, 50 (but he can pass for old), kicking up dust as the stars of a geezer's Porky's. But for the characters' wives and girlfriends (Gwen Verdon, Jessica Tandy, Maureen Stapleton), the spectacle is bittersweet. They realize that at any age, men must be boys, and women must be their sandbox playmates or their strict mothers. Some genders will just never grow...

Professionally she is a palaeobotanist and an authority on coal. In 1918 she married Humphrey Verdon Roe, who with his brother Sir Alliott Verdon Roe developed the Avro biplane. They live in Surrey with their two sons and cooperate on birth control campaigns. She first published Married Love in 1918. Since then she has sold 700,000 copies in England alone.
