...band that gave us the nineties' version of "I Will Survive" now shows us that they can do just that--survive. Titled Prolonging the Magic, Cake's newest release doesn't use the exact same brand of magic as its last album, Fashion Nugget. Things are a little more upbeat this time around. The Sacramento, California-based band's latest work will probably appeal to even more people than just those "The Distance" freaks, who might be disappointed that there is no similar song on the album. Prolonging the Magic doesn't have all of the same ingredients as Cake...
...notoriously obsessed with cleanliness, JERRY SEINFELD seems to get himself implicated in some pretty messy situations. No longer playing a lovable version of himself on a sitcom, the comedian has been cast in a slightly less endearing role--as the other man in a New York City couple's divorce. Last week Seinfeld was publicly linked with JESSICA SKLAR, 26, who reportedly has not let her four-month-old marriage stand in the way of her dating. Sklar apparently began seeing Seinfeld, whom she met at the gym, mere weeks after returning from her honeymoon with Eric Nederlander, whose family...
...London or Leeds or Los Angeles or other theater venues where McKellen has illuminated the stage for nearly four decades, torched it with his wily intelligence, seduced it with the precision of his plummy voice. But except for Richard III, which he brilliantly reimagined for film, all these great performances disappeared into the playgoer's memory...
That may be why I wasn't moved more by the PBS series and Beloved, Oprah Winfrey's movie version of Toni Morrison's soul-searing novel. Both productions were excellent, but it's not exactly news that slavery was a horrible crime. I wish we could throw as much energy and emotion into solving the gritty racial problems that we face today as we pour into condemning the sins of the past...
...until Babe Ruth came along--was a rough scramble for runs made of walks, bunts, stolen bases and singles. The Cubs' top power hitter, Wildfire Schulte, managed all of seven home runs, typical for the era. If a club like this one had to play the highly evolved 1998 version of the game, it would be bashed into submission. Even by the Arizona Diamondbacks. And by the way: the Cubs lost the World Series to the White...
