...Minutes after they parted, one of Midgely's dogs, Ruth, started to shake and vomit. Luckily, he got her to a vet in time. Although Ruth's poisoning wasn't the first reported, police judged the case a low priority. That changed two years later when Whisky, one of then Governor Chris Patten's Norfolk terriers, was poisoned (but survived). Police belatedly called Midgely in to help with a composite sketch of the suspect and later had him try to spot the man among passersby on Bowen Road...
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN His blue-collar anthems were both bitter and proud, lamenting the outrages, and reveling in the glories, of everyday life in America. Born in the U.S.A. isn't a patriotic showstopper but a song about a destitute angry vet...
DIED. HAROLD RUSSELL, 88, actor-by-fluke and World War II vet who lost both hands during the war and later won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1946 for The Best Years of Our Lives; in Needham, Mass. Artificial Intelligence, Hayden Christensen in Life as a House and Tony Shalhoub...

A respiratory infection, if that's what they have, could spread to the 20,000 other birds in the chicken house in a matter of days. The vet recommends the antibiotic enrofloxacin--the animal version of Cipro. Since it's not practical to treat the birds individually, the farmer pours a 5-gal. jug of the drug into the flock's drinking water. Five days later the birds are doing fine. Disaster has been averted...
