...Like Hughes, many of the seekers at this military job fair are so fresh from the service they've yet to grow out of their crew cuts or their ma'ams and sirs. While unemployment among all veterans was a low 3.8% nationwide in 2006 (vs. 4.4% for the non-veteran population), for the country's newest, youngest and sometimes battle-scarred former service members, finding jobs post-service is proving to be frustrating. Of the 332,000 veterans between age 20 and 24, the unemployment rate was 10.4% in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics...

...vets can be more confusing and overwhelming than helpful. The Servicemembers' Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as the Montgomery G.I. Bill, provides for education and retraining; Congress is currently considering a "post-9/11" version of the bill with even greater benefits. The departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs jointly launched the Transition Assistance Program in 1989, and each branch of the military has since then added its own workshops. Then there are the corporations - Home Depot, Union Pacific, Starbucks, Raytheon, Dunkin' Donuts, Merrill...

...else to explain the conspicuously public dinner in Washington last week between Bloomberg and Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, the Vietnam veteran and G.O.P. apostate who has come out in full opposition to President Bush and the continuation of the Iraq War? Hagel has toyed with the idea of running for the G.O.P. nomination. But he's an outsider now within the Republican family; having attacked Bush, he'd be doomed in a G.O.P. primary. Hagel's only avenue, like Bloomberg's, would be a third-party bid. It doesn't hurt that Hagel happened to make millions...

...Game 2 of the series, Bennett Salvatore hit Golden State star point guard Baron Davis with a technical foul for a similarly mild offense. It was his second tech of the game, so Davis was also ejected. Last Thursday Dick Bevetta, a 32-year league veteran, rushed across the court to call a tech on Houston Rockets forward Juwan Howard in Game 6 of the Rockets-Jazz series. This call was particularly confounding since Utah's Mehmet Okur, not Howard, had instigated a mini-scuffle after the Houston forward committed a tough, but not intentional, foul. Last weekend, referee...

...After the banquet of feelings in Follies, the Encores! version of the 1932 Face the Music was a minty palate-cleanser. A topical revue by the young Moss Hart (then 27) and the veteran Irving Berlin (43; he'd live to 101), it has one hit song, "Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee," and lots of impudent attitude, which the revival nicely preserved under John Rando's direction. An expert cast led by Encores! stalwarts Judy Kaye and Walter Bobbie found the fun of bankrupt millionaires and amiably venal cops improbably involved in putting on a Broadway show...
