President Bush made clear his lack of commitment to the health care crisis last Wednesday when he vetoed the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). In a country where the number of people lacking health insurance rose in 2006 for the sixth year in a row to 47 million–almost one in six Americans–and the number of uninsured children stands at 8.7 million, this veto is inexcusable. SCHIP was founded in 1997 to help provide subsidized insurance for poor children. As the number of uninsured adults has climbed...

...Kosovo and cede control to the U.N., provided the province legally remained part of Serbia. But that condition has proved unacceptable to ethnic Albanians, who make up 90% of Kosovo's population. A subsequent U.N. plan to grant Kosovo full but "supervised" independence foundered on Russian threats of a veto in the U.N. Security Council. But many scientists have found that the legislation actually hindered the possibilities of research by imposing regulatory controls on the acquisition of ova for therapeutic cloning. According to Kevin Casey, the University?...

...faithful - of all creeds and political affiliations - barraged the White House last week, imploring the President to reconsider his veto threat. Our efforts did not bear fruit. But I wonder if, before he put his veto stamp on that legislation, the President thought back to that little meeting in a Baptist Sunday school classroom, not far from where he grew up. I wonder if he remembered that day, what we talked about, what was in his heart, and how much hope there was in the room. If he knows his Bible, the President should remember that Jesus said to suffer...
