...plan for a compromise solution that would give the opposition greater representation in and effective veto power over a new "National Unity" government is being promoted by an Arab League envoy. There was a time not too long ago that such a deal could perhaps have been enough to assuage Hizballah's concerns that Siniora and his government are American puppets who are intent on disarming the Shi'ite militia and reshaping the Middle East in Israel's favor. But the standoff between the Hizballah-led opposition, and the government has lately become so raw, and so personal, that...
...Hizballah is demanding the formation of a new government in which its opposition bloc would have effective veto power. And it's certainly hard to see how Siniora can carry on with much authority after Friday's show of strength by his opposition...
Using his first veto since he entered office, President George W. Bush rejected a bill that would have partially lifted his 2001 ban on the use of federal funds for human embryonic-stem-cell research. Still, U.S. scientists are pushing ahead...

Moreover, some politicians in Beirut suspect that the assassination of Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel...
...confrontation appears to still be taking a deadly toll. Gemayel's murder has brought Lebanon's Western-backed government dangerously close to collapse. Six pro-Syrian Shi'ite ministers quit the 24-member coalition cabinet a week ago after their bid for extra seats that would give them a veto-wielding one-third stake in the government was rebuffed. Now, following Gemayel's murder, it will take the resignation - or death - of two more ministers to bring down the government, which occurs legally when it loses more than one third of its ministers...
