...Cashing in on connections that would make even the Harvard Alumni Association green with envy, Lang cut his first solo record after meeting ex-Prince producer, David Z. The album's debut single and title track, "Lie to Me," saw some heavy rotation on MTV and extended play on VH1. On the video, he was able to capitalize on his all American pre-pubescent mug. Riding the wail of his electric manhood. Lang's acceleration to the top of the charts was fueled by his lanky frame, laid-back cool and thickly applied accolades from every blues brother...
...problem with this empathetic if unimaginative movie, based on Sonny Bono's memoir, is that it refuses to be awful--viewers expecting camp will do better trolling VH1 for Cher videos. The story of Sonny and Cher's rise and fall, comeback and dissolution is standard-issue backstage drama, albeit one with more bobcat vests than usual. Renee Faia does a spot-on Cher, suggesting humanity beneath the tics. Jay Underwood gets Sonny's doofiness but not, one realizes in its absence, the wimpy vulnerability that made him tolerable. ...looking to make a career statement. John Mellencamp's latest album, John Mellencamp (Columbia), is no exception. These are difficult days to be John Mellencamp. Rock is on the run, youth is on the rise, and his brand of rural rock skews a little old even for the VH1 set. But Mellencamp, 47, is soldiering on, trying to re-establish his name, his image and his music. He has left Mercury Records, his label for some 20 years, and signed with Columbia. He has a new book of artwork out, Mellencamp: Paintings and Reflections (HarperCollins; $40). And he's willing...
