Long the course shopper's Via Condotti, the Fine Arts Department is offering at least two bargains this autumn. The first is Fine Arts 152a (Tu. Th. at 11), billed in the catalogue as Prof. Ackerman's course, but placed at the last moment in the worthy hands of young, brilliant Everett Fahy. Fahy teaches Fifteenth Century Italian Art with a sympathy for both his subject and his students. For Low Country fans, there is Prof. van Regteran Altena, who wowed his first class by delivering a forty-minute lecture in verse (on Seventeenth Century Dutch Art). The rest...

...most damaging thought about Governor Romney's Viet Nam flip-flop via the brainwashing cop-out is not that he could be so easily "brainwashed" but that he is just another wheeler-dealer seeking a popular opinion to stand on and lacking true conviction. He is a good actor, but there are better ones in the arena. What we need now is an honest...

...square "jewel box" to the surface. From six radioactive sources in the box, alpha particles bombarded a small area (4 sq. in.) of the lunar surface. Inside the box, delicate sensors recorded the number and velocities of alpha particles rebounding from the surface material and relayed them to earth via Surveyor's radio. By analyzing the pattern of the rebound particles, scientists hope to be able definitely to identify compounds and elements in the lunar soil. "If the experiment succeeds, it will mark the first time," said Hughes Aircraft Surveyor Program Manager Robert Roderick, "that man has been able...

...discussion concerned abortion as a means of ex post facto birth control. "The 'disease' of an unwanted pregnancy is usually not fatal," said Obstetrician Kenneth J. Ryan of Case-Western Reserve University School of Medicine, "but living with it is so onerous that many women risk death via criminal abortion rather than suffer its far-reaching effects." How many? No one knew. "Estimates" running from 200,000 to 1,500,000 a year in the U.S. are worthless guesses, said the Population Council's Dr. Christopher Tietze. He also scoffed at estimates of 10,000 deaths annually...

Lebanon last week agreed to let oil companies resume shipments to the three Western nations from its Mediterranean ports. That oil comes via two separate pipelines from Iraq to Tripoli and from Saudi Arabia to Sidon. Both lines run through Syria, whose extremist regime opposed ending the embargo and could easily close either line by twisting a few valves. The Trans-Arabian pipeline, jointly owned by Texaco, Standard Oil of California, Standard Oil (N.J.) and Mobil Oil, has been shut since the fighting erupted. Because some 20 miles of it runs through former Syrian territory, now occupied by Israel...
