When his will was read, it transpired that he had left his valuable book collection to Harvard. This included four folios of Shakespere, first editions of the "Fairie Queene," of Ben Jonson's works, of "Robinson Crusoe," of Gulliver's Travels," "The Vicar of Wakefield," the "Elegy in a Country Churchyard," and many other works almost as famous. There were first editions and presentation copies of Dickens, Thackeray, Browning, Tennyson, and Stevenson, and numerous other manuscripts from the same period of English literature. ...Boyd-Carpenter graduated from St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, in 1864. Later he lectured at Cambridge and Oxford for a number of years (1878-1895), and in 1904 he came to Harvard to give the lectures under the William Belden Noble foundation. He served as Vicar of St. James, Holloway, from 1870 to 1879, and in 1879 became Vicar of Christ's Church at Lancaster Gate. Three years later he was made Canon of Windsor, holding that place for two years. From 1884 to 1911 he was Bishop of Ripon, and in 1912 he was made Canon of Westminster...
