With a stage that utilizes the Loeb's cramped quarters in one of the best and most spacious manners that this reviewer has ever seen, Slavs! begins by tackling Russian politics in a tumultuous era with absurdity, vicious humor and a great concern for both the individuals and the masses. The opening scene immediately draws in the audience--even those completely ignorant of Russian history--with a flurry of fake snow and a lively political debate going on between two babushkas. These sprightly women, however, quickly turn into the mindlessly smiling grandmothers they are supposed to be as soon...

...there has been vicious warfare on and off since Sudan's independence in 1956. Africa's largest country is really two: an Islamic, Arabized north and a Christian, animist and African south. The government in Khartoum is headed by Lieut. General Omar Hassan al-Bashir, but the real power is Hassan al-Turabi, a radical scholar who leads the National Islamic Front and is intent on enforcing Muslim law on the land. On the battlefield, the shifting coalition led by John Garang's SPLA has been successful recently, opening a new front in the northeast. Officially the rebels are fighting...

...focus of the story changes from Belle's village to the Beast's castle, the show grows simultaneously better and worse. The wolves that chase Belle's father Maurice (Grant Cowan) and the Beast himself (Fred Inkley) resemble the cast of Cats infinitely more than they look like vicious forest carnivores. In addition, while all of the living objects in the castle don exquisite costumes, their exaggerated gestures and facial expressions worth of Jim Carrey start out cute but quickly degenerate into irritating. They deserve props for being able to perform at all in such rigid costume designs, particularly...

...small dinosaur, each of which was clearly covered with feathers. According to their report, which appears in the latest issue of Nature, the specimens not only cement the increasingly popular theory that birds are descended directly from dinos. They also suggest that many kinds of dinosaur, including the vicious velociraptors that slashed their way through Crichton's fiction, may have been festooned with their own colorful plumage...

Soon after that touchingly, enlightened gesture, a medium-sized horde of Mameluke warriors stages a surprise attack on the French camp, and Currier orchestrates a battle scene that measures favorably against the fur-flying in Braveheart. As in that film, the fighting here is vicious, bloody, and decidedly unromantic. The Mamelukes eventually retreat, their scimitars proving rather ill-matched to rifles and artillery, but the French men are sufficiently rattled to move quickly on to another campsite. Jean-Michel, however, has not finished his drawings, and he and Augustin lag a bit behind. Inevitably, the two are separated from their...
