Madoff arrived at court in a dark suit and bulletproof vest, and proceeded to deny his victims even the catharsis of a trial with his plan to plead guilty to 11 felony counts. That surrender enraged some who feared this was one more scam, to protect his family and conceal his true villainy. He still faces 150 years in prison. "I hope his time in jail will be hell on earth," said victim Joan Sinkin, 75, of Boynton Beach...
However, the Swat-based Taliban denies that the incident took place in the valley. Several officials and commentators have expressed skepticism that the men performing the punishment in the video were Taliban militants. A local news organization noted that were it up to the Taliban, the victim "would have been shot." Chais isn't talking, but that adds up to real money, enough to create, in his case, a foundation, the Chais Family Foundation, purportedly worth $175 million before Madoff's arrest on Dec. 11, 2008. The foundation is now kaput, as is Chais' financial sub-empire and as is, for that matter, my retirement. Chais has several lawsuits pending against him, including one by Eric Roth, the Hollywood screenwriter...
