...death. Nowhere did he express this desire to tie love and death together more succinctly than in an etching of 1884 called Finis. It is the last plate in an ironical series on the life of a "fallen woman," throughout which Klinger essayed some bitter jabs at the prevailing Victorian hypocrisies about virginity and whoredom. The luckless and persecuted heroine, freed from life, is carried away by an angel, or maybe an ideal lover, sprawled on his wings as on a feather bed. "We flee the shadow of death, not death itself, for it is the ultimate goal...

Filmed with refined and delicious whimsy by Reginald Mills, given a merrily eclectic score by John Lanchberry, Peter Rabbit never turns cute or saccharine. ...Kent to a peaceful death at 80 in 1857-which came, appropriately, while the by then viscount was reading Gibbon-is circumstantial to a fault. The book bristles with references to "new sources" of information, as well as a full quota of those "we can fairly assumes" peculiar to Victorian biography. It comes fully provided, too, with an index, footnotes, useful explanatory charts of naval engagements, appendices, tables of consanguinity, illustration showing various Hornblower residences and a bibliography of books on Sir Horatio, all, as it happens, written by an author named C.S. Forester. Parkinson even reproduces a marriage notice...
