...nonconformist nature (one of Jobim's hits, "Desafinado" (or "off-key") celebrates the genre's subtly unsettling sound). Of course, today, decades later, people in the States listen to "The Girl From Ipanema" and, to unschooled ears, it sounds like a novelty song, kind of the way "Livin' La Vida Loca" sounded five minutes after I first heard it. But if you listen to the original version of "Ipanema," it's really an elegant, intelligent song. Now people hear the title and, sadly, think Muzak. The music industry has a way, maybe like history itself, of turning mountainous achievements into...
Martin's songwriters seem to have a thing for wild women. First, on his self-titled 1999 English-language debut, there was that crazy chick who was Livin' La Vida Loca. Now, on his new CD, the Latin pop star sings about sex-obsessed hotties on She Bangs and Jezabel. Much like that on Martin's last album, Sound Loaded's production is somewhat overdone, and the vocals are often overwhelmed by the surging instrumentation. While in Martin's previous hit "Livin' La Vida Loca" the energy and verve present was able to compensate for so-so vocals, this was clearly not the case in either version of "She Bangs." Both the backing music and vocals just seem like mediocre rehashes of past successes...

When the time is right, I will settle down. But for now, it's great "livin' la vida loca"! KRISTA PALOMBA Watertown, Conn...
...This has now become an especially topical issue because the Latin American songwriter of "Livin' La Vida Loca," Robi Rosa, is going loco at the Republicans for using his recent hit song "The Cup Of Life" (a sort-of "Livin' La Vida Java") as a centerpiece of their convention. The upbeat tune was blasted out at the conclusion of George W. Bush's acceptance speech. Rosa pointed out that he had not given permission for the usage and labeled the connection "perverse." He specifically lambasted the GOP for "trying to forge a connection to the Latin community with...
