ExxonMobil spokesman Kevin Allexon told TIME that the company "shares concerns about the challenge of meeting the winter heating needs of those who cannot afford the cost." But "it is our view that government programs to assist low-income families with their heating-oil requirements are the best way to address these needs." Allexon is referring specifically to LIHEAP, the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. It is supposed to provide about $5 billion in home-heating-fuel aid, but in recent years it has seen only half that. President Bush even tried to reduce fiscal 2009 LIHEAP funding...
...Rantissi's view, it didn't matter if a few dozen - or even a few hundred - Hamas fighters were killed. Their "martyrdom" would only strengthen Palestinian hatred for Israel and sympathy for Hamas. It didn't matter if Israeli jets bombed Hamas offices, because cinder-block structures could easily be replaced. Although Dixon's study failed to add new information on the question of diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, other experts view these results as useful fodder in the growing field of diabetes research...
...sort of impulses that drive Barack Obama in policy-making are the same as those that drive young people to form such strongly left-leaning political positions. The impulse comes from a lack of experience and from a lack of faith in the experience of predecessors. The view presumes that virtually all of the political leaders that have come before now have either failed to realize something obvious or, worse, are too misguided or self-serving to seek solutions that prioritize anyone other than themselves. It is precisely because of this view that so many Harvard students and their contemporaries...
