...Heart of the World, Guy Maddin’s glorious take on early Russian melodrama that won the award for Best Experimental Film from the National Society of Film Critics last month. As Maddin cuts from one shot to the next with uninterrupted speed, the film feeds the viewer a surprisingly satisfying plethora of visual information and symbolic imagery; you’d think that the quantity would smother your mind, but the film’s tried-and-true love story leaves one free to turn one’s attention from the film’s plot...
...inhibition. In 1962 Hong Kong, two neighbors (Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai) learn that their spouses are having an affair with each other. Slowly they are drawn into their own web of resentment, guilt and lust. Do the cuckolds have their own affair? That is for the viewer to judge. What's beyond dispute is the artful evocation of a world of glamour and deceit, humidity and heartbreak--it's the year's first unmissable film event. Recommended to anyone who's ever felt the fear and lure of falling in love...

A counterculture tragedy--innocent hippie turns violent revolutionary--finally emerges. The film is too pretty and schematic, but it does envelop the viewer in rue for a wasted life...
...here are quite accomplished. Stiles is understated and empathy-winning, though it's pretty clear from the editing (shots of Stiles' face followed by shots of a woman's feet doing intricate dance steps) that much of her dancing was done by a double. Still, by the end, the viewer is rooting just as hard for Stiles and her double to do well in the big end-of-the-movie dance audition as we once did for Jennifer Beals and her double at the big end-of-the-movie dance audition in "Flashdance." Thomas gives a solid performance as Stiles...
