Educational TV, of course, can hardly tolerate dullness, but at least it doesn't have to engage in the frenetic competition to "entertain" the public. The WGBH management feels that 'in a very real sense the program should take place not in the studio, but in the viewer's mind...
...Carol. Fredric March harrumphed and hammed as Scrooge, Basil Rathbone clanked and groaned as Marley's ghost and, although there were occasional tuneful moments, most Dickens' fanciers recoiled from the sight of the Spirit-of-Christmas-Present (Ray Middleton) bursting into operetta-like arias. In Manhattan, no viewer had an excuse for missing Scrooge since an excellent 1951 British film, starring Alistair Sim, was shown 16 times during the week over WOR-TV. On Christmas Day, the film's eight sponsors graciously let it be shown three times without one interruption for commercials...
...trademark. Thon builds each composition on a lattice of smudgy rectangles, laid in partly with putty knives, and laces his sharp, delicate outlines well into the lattice. An extraordinary yet unobtrusive richness of texture results. More important, Thon's technique stretches and modifies the vision of the viewer. In his pictures, air has peculiar sparkle and density, and the things it seems to enclose look fragile to the point of evanescence...
...still lifes on exhibit in the University of Wisconsin's Library Gallery in Madison. But the fascinating assortment of smoking pipes, fiddles, Confederate bills, newspaper scraps and crumpled chewing-gum wrappers-all seeming to leap out of the canvases in vivid perspective-is too tempting. Furtively many a viewer last week glanced around to see if anyone was watching, then probed gently at the paintings to see whether the pictures actually were painted or just pasted...
...Camera. Sears, Roebuck & Co. has brought out a 3-D box camera, for $17.50, considerably cheaper than other 3-D cameras. The outfit includes mounting cards and stereo viewer. The unit is actually two cameras fastened together, and each can also be used separately...
