...rating these days? Normally the reasons children are forbidden to see films are explicit sex and spectacular spasms of violence. In the case of Showgirls, though, the list of no-nos might read, "Obscene level of incompetence, excessive inanity in the story line, gross negligence of the viewer's intelligence, a prurient interest in the quick buck...
...jaunts to the ladies' room, where she bumps into surprise guests like Heidi Fleiss, who outfits her in new lingerie. In another recurring segment, Miller takes phone calls onstage from members of the studio audience, who are seen on a video monitor. The phone bits can be funny (a viewer revealed that she served her unsuspecting boyfriend a cat-food pie), but they would work just as well if Miller simply strolled down the aisles talking to guests the old-fashioned way. Least successful are Miller's opening monologues, which mimic those of countless female stand-up comics who joke...
...show's major innovation, however, isn't its format or guest list, but a moody visual style that gives a viewer the feeling of walking into a bewildering installation at the Whitney Museum's Biennial. While the viewer gets a good glimpse of Jack Devlin, who has been sent to kill Bennett after she gains knowledge of an attempt to sabotage the Internet, the viewer learns little about the actual mastermind of the plan and his intentions. Instead, the viewer catches glimpses of Jeff Gregg, a Bill Gates...
...Heathers made the mistake of treating the peer success of blond teenage girls satirically. Amy Heckerling, the writer-director of Clueless, is cannier than that. An able architect of loosey-goosey comedy (she directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High and the Look Who's Talking films), Heckerling wants the viewer to like these girls even as she pokes fun at them. The toughest intellectual challenge for Cher and her friends may be deciphering the Thomas Guide map of Los Angeles streets, but they have an ease and a good nature that ultimately, if at times strenuously, endear...
