...that was long ago and far away, in a country different from our own. But there is a convergence of new books on the period, with fresh deceptions and clarifying truths. Tony Hiss's The View from Alger's Window: A Son's Memoir is a tender hagiography that makes a claim for his father's innocence--a case so heartbreakingly sweet that one struggles (though unsuccessfully) to join in the son's self-deception. William F. Buckley Jr., who as a young conservative in the 1950s was a friend to both Chambers and McCarthy, gives his version of McCarthy...

Last week reporters were taken to a Pristina suburb to view the site of a NATO cluster-bomb attack. The bombs had missed the intended target, a welding factory, Serbian officials said, and hit an adjacent Albanian village, destroying 10 homes and injuring seven people. That did appear to be the case; the distinctive craters left by cluster bombs marked a vegetable and herb garden, releasing an incongruous aroma of onions and chives amid the debris. Roofs were shattered, and one bomb had landed in the center of a family's living room. Why bomb here...

...enormous figure in French art that he would become. But there was never a time in his life when he did not work, and he kept painting and drawing throughout his five-month sojourn among his brothers and cousins in New Orleans. Hence the shapely and interesting show on view through Aug. 29 at the New Orleans Museum of Art: "Degas and New Orleans." It consists only of some 40 paintings and drawings; it is, as curator Gail Feigenbaum puts it, a "cabinet exhibition," but one that's clearly focused and well worth seeing...

Earlier this month a mammoth demonstration took place in the streets of Beijing. Students demonstrated day and night in front of the embassies of the U.S., Britain and other NATO countries, shouting anti-Western slogans. The popular view in the Western media is that the protests against NATO's bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade were a nationalist movement "supported and orchestrated by the Chinese government." But the characterization is quite off base, and will only lead Westerners into further misunderstanding of how the Chinese people think and feel...
