There are many lenses through which to view the worldwide financial crisis as it has rippled from soured loans to banks' balance sheets to the credit markets and, finally, into the real economy. Lenders were greedy, people lived beyond their means, government abdicated its responsibility to regulate. Through all those explanations runs the thread of risk--and how it was mismanaged. Financiers, as well as the investors who bought their wares and the ratings agencies that evaluated them, agreed that by applying the proper equations it was possible to, say, bundle a bunch of subprime mortgages, chop them...
...fact, she cost the GOP ticket more than she helped it. In that poll, 59% said they didn't think she was qualified to be Vice President - a view shared by many mandarins of the GOP. But the enthusiasm she briefly generated made gaming Palin's next move a popular sport. Will she join the big-money speaker's circuit? Become, as Tina Fey joked, the "white Oprah"? Run for Senate? Run for President in 2012 as the new face of a reinvented Republican Party...
...sure Richard Corliss and I watched the same movie [Nov. 3]. Oliver Stone most certainly did have a point of view in filming W., his slice-of-life depiction of George W. Bush. The New York Times recently investigated the contention, revealing that not one but three sets of researchers found that “professors have virtually no impact on the political views and ideology of their students.” The conclusive results of all three studies will hopefully lay to rest the baseless whines thrown up by conservatives whenever the youth vote is not going their way. Conservatives cite the liberal majority amongst ’60s-generation university professors today...
...dramatic political conversion, it's safe to assume he does not consider Barack Obama's election on Tuesday to be divinely ordained. In June, Dobson delivered a furious broadside against the Democrat, charging that he was "deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own world view." And yet in a year in which the economy mattered more than social issues for most voters, Obama's comfortable victory included Democratic gains in every single religious category among the electorate...
