Peter Bogdanovich is a film maker with talent enough to make anyone regret what he does not do with it. Targets (1968), like most first films, was rough and not fully assimilated, but for all its crudity it had a vigor and invention that Bogdanovich has not approached since. Its long climactic scene, involving a schizophrenic sniper picking off the patrons of a drive-in theater, was made with the kind of virtuosity that promised an audacious new director. With each subsequent film, the memory of Targets-as well as its promise-grows dimmer...

His Walter is blood kin to Pookie Adams of The Sterile Cuckoo (which represents the previous collaboration of Director Pakula and Scenarist Sargent), with none of Pookie's surface brashness and vigor. Her counterpart, Algernon's Cecily, with whom she shares the funniest scene in the comedy, is not as stylish; Anne Ames, in her carriage and visage, mistakes movement for animation. Stephen Zinsser...

...Scorpio does little else, it proves that Lancaster, after all this time, still has an enviable store of vigor. At 59, he is a little paunchier, a little slower, and he breathes harder on the run; but he can still haul himself up a scaffolding with the best. Director Winner sends him pounding around a construction site in Vienna, pursued by Alain Delon, who means to kill him on behalf of the CIA. Lancaster leads Delon and an accomplice a hectic chase through tunnels, up steel girders, across gangways. Watching Lancaster leave the youngsters in the dust gives an almost...
