...third largest producer of domestic wines. In the deal, Petri acquired Italian Swiss's wineries at Asti, Lodi, and Clovis, Calif., bottling plants at Chicago and Fairview, N.J., New York's Gambarelli & Davitto distributing organization, and one of the best-known labels on the domestic vine. At one leap, Petri went from fifth to first place among U.S. vintners, with a total capacity of 46 million gallons...
Lloyd never consciously draws a figure or a scene, but objects occasionally turn up in his work. Sometimes the image is a dragon's head; other times the effect is of a vine-covered jungle, a gloomy peat bog, or a procession of dancing elves. "I start painting 90% of the time without any idea." says Lloyd. "Eventually it suggests something." He avoids titles: "If I call it a 'Burning Tower,' right away I'm keeping people from using their own imagination. If you like the color forms, that's what pleases me. Then...
What is the point of such a ruling--is there anything to justify its irritating restrictions? If the grape-vine serves us well, the objection to women in the House during afternoons is the same tired horse that has carried countless messages of rejection before, the doctrine of protection--protection, in this case, from one's roommates, House mates, and oneself. Their delicate, pastel coloration, slippery sonorities, puckish humor and technical perfection make these four sides the best of the lot. When Gieseking comes to the otherworldly slow movement of Mozart's Concerto in A Major (K. 488), he sounds rather heartless; his Beethoven G-Major Concerto is appropriately intimate, but could do with more drive and more clarity of detail...
...years the swarthy men of Cabernardi, their fathers and their grandfathers before them have dug sulphur out of the vine-covered hills around their village. The black-streaked yellow ore has brought them steady jobs, tidy red brick houses and a measure of happiness, but in recent years it has brought a creeping fear: What if the supply of sulphur should run out? As the mine shaft plunged deeper and deeper into the earth, even Cabernardi's Communists went regularly to the little parish church to pray to St. Barbara that the seam might last forever...
