Hardest hit when the new crop comes in will be the wine growers of the Midi, who supply most of the vintageless vin ordinaire that sells in France for about 250 a bottle (and is often mixed with Algerian wine to raise its alcoholic content). The South's worried farmers are demanding that the government bar all imports, even from Algeria, and buy up last year's surplus, perhaps to turn it into industrial alcohol. But Paris does not want to spend the money, and is treaty-bound to buy all the wine that independent Algeria can produce...

...sickening shade of blue. In France, the satirical weekly Le Canard Enchame issued a stinging, and dead-serious, rebuke to television. "Commentators spoke in low, vibrato tones to announce the least temperature rise . . . the most insipid details," said the magazine. "All was 'lachryma Christi' of the worst vin tage." In the U.S., on the other hand, New York Journal-American TV Critic Jack O'Brian found coverage "reverent, respectful, thorough and amazingly informative," but he added that it "seemed sacrilegious" when ABC followed a documentary on Pope John with "a fairly revolting fusillade of violently noisy shots...

...they are reluctant to give up all their marketing traditions even for Prisunic. Most Prisunic shoppers still insist on scrutinizing their meat without any of that cellophane around it, having their choice from an impressive selection of France's 300 varieties of cheese, and buying their Prisunic vin rouge (usually from Algeria or the Midi) right out of the spigot (25? a bottle). And, efficiency or not, many Prisunic stores close down promptly at 12:15 for the usual two-hour lunch...
