Cambridge Society for Early Music features "Unknown Bach" on Monday, as Joshua Rifkin conducts an oboe concerto, violin concerto and the first "modern" performance of Bach's reorchestration of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater." ...view, about the most reliably good music group on campus. Its programming is excellent and its performing solid. Bach Soc does not disappoint this year, either. Roy Kogan, a fine soloist who excelled last season, plays Schumann's Piano Concerto in October, Jennie Shames appears in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, and the rest of the year includes Britten, Mahler, Chausson and some workhorse Beethoven. Bach doesn't figure in much, but that's the paradox of this orchestra -- it's supposed to play the Brandenburgs, but instead bombards you with great nineteenth and twentieth century pieces...
Mamet was clever to juxtapose these two plays: one drama answers the dilemmas of the other in a very sober and natural way, and George and Emil (Jerry Gershman and Ted Kazanoff) interact like a violin duet, weaving the problems of the evening and life into some simple sense...
DIED. Joe Venuti, eightyish, peerless jazz violinist whose daring experiments in swing were matched only by his outrageous practical jokes; in Seattle. Trained in the classics, Venuti played second violin in the Philadelphia Orchestra but longed to improvise. He played with Dance Band Leaders Jean Goldkette and Paul Whiteman, teamed up with Guitarist Eddie Lang to make hundreds of vintage jazz recordings and then formed his own band.
