Alert and active as ever, Cellist Pablo Casals celebrated his 94th birthday in San Juan, P.R., by joining Violinist Alexander Schneider and Pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski in a performance of Mendelssohn's Piano Trio in D Minor. Rhapsodized Schneider: "Don Pablo played it as beautifully as he did ten years ago-no, 40 years ago." Later, at the official mansion of Puerto Rico Governor Luis Ferre, it was Casals' turn to hear other musicians give a recital in his honor. "It was all wonderful music," he said. Casals was eminently qualified to be a critic; included in the selections...
Five young string players stayed up all night in a Manhattan hotel room playing Schubert and Brahms, the grumbling of the management to no avail. The next morning, along with half a hundred others, they assembled at Carnegie Hall for a rehearsal with Conductor-Violinist Alexander ("Sasha") Schneider. "It's not warm enough," said Schneider after a few bars, and he was not referring to Carnegie's central heating. That afternoon, they were all downtown at The New School rehearsing chamber music. "Your pizzicato sounds terribly dry," complained Violinist Felix Galimir to a group in one classroom...

He started out as a violinist, played trumpet in the San Mateo College Jazz Band, composed electronic music, and one day picked up the electric-bass under Garcia's instruction; two weeks later he played his first concert with the Dead. On stage, he moves to and fro from stage-front to his amplifier at the back, looking cheerful, at times excited by the music. On his left, Bob Weir-tall, serious-looking-looks down at his rhythm guitar, occasionally peering across the stage from under his eyebrows...

Nonetheless, it was a fine performance, with especially good work by cellist Corinne Flavin and violinist Robert Brink...
...holds much of the responsibility for the orchestra's operation is its chairman, Maynard Goldman. Goldman is a violinist who teaches at Brandies, plays in the orchestra, and acts as the performers' spokesman. He has a deep enthusiasm for the orchestra and the innovations it is attempting. "It is an opportunity for people like myself to get together and perform, to choose our own programs, and choose our own conductor" he says. "We certainly don't make our living performing with the Boston Philharmonia...
