...Serene, but a little static and ceremonious. The Virgin and Child with Saints, a panel painting from the Bellini workshop that was done in the years around 1505 when Titian worked there, is typical. Six gently realized figures are aligned simply in a row toward the viewer, barely acknowledging one another. The genre is called a sacra conversazione - sacred conversation - but nobody in this picture seems to be on speaking terms. Less than a decade later, in Virgin and Child with Saint Catherine, Saint Dominic, and a Donor, Titian, by then in charge of his own studio, brought the Virgin...

...Titian could do it all. He could make the conventions of Renaissance art more intimate and candid, or he could enlarge them, launching the Virgin theatrically into the heavens or planting her throne high among spectacular settings of classical arches and columns. It matters that he came of age just as artists were abandoning wood panels in favor of stretched canvas - especially in Venice, a maritime power where ship canvas was everywhere - and turning away from fresco or egg tempera to the relatively new and more pliant medium of oil paint. Drag a loaded brush over the textured surface...

...you’ve been holding out for the day that “Superbad” is remade as a melodrama, your day has finally come. Greg Mottola, who directed the 2007 hit summer comedy about two virgin high school seniors getting drunk and looking to get laid, doesn’t exhibit much originality as the writer/director of “Adventureland,” the sentimental tale of a virgin college graduate getting drunk, stoned, and (surprise) trying to get laid. “Adventureland” does boast some funny characters and a killer soundtrack...

...quo.The exhibition begins at a turning point in the history of painting, with the shift from wood panels to stretched canvases as the substrate for the painted work. The contrasting pair that opens the exhibition juxtaposes a Titian canvas with an earlier Bellini panel of a similar scene, a virgin surrounded by saints. The smooth surface of the polished wood panel and the carefully hidden brushstrokes give the Bellini its placidly silken, liquid surface, and even its painted and columned frame recalls the Italian High Renaissance; but the rougher surface of the canvas seems to free Titian to make visible...

...most guy-oriented comedies, originality is the merest wrinkle. (What if this 40-year-old man were ... a virgin?) Give writer-director Jody Hill two cheers for asking: What if we did a workplace comedy, and the focus of our attention and sympathy were on a fellow - played by Rogen, everyone's favorite jovial slob - who is this close to the simmering psycho Robert De Niro played in Taxi Driver? The gun love, the quiet surliness, the loner status, the head whisperings, the mistaken fashioning of other people's motives into paranoid scenarios - all echo the violent cabbie in Martin...
