...logic is easy to see. Without graduate deferments, it is true that "oldest-first" would have meant a virtual depletion of men very near the practice of their profession, whether it be engineer or political scientist. Under the new system, however, not nearly so many older men will be taken. They will be replaced by 19-year-olds, men hardly close to or even sure of their future profession...

...tense interest in Dak Son, a hamlet of 2,000 Montagnard people, was that it was the new home and sanctuary of some 800 Montagnard refugees who 14 months ago fled from life under the Viet Cong in the surrounding countryside, where they had been forced to work in virtual slavery as farmers and porters. The Montagnards are the innocents of Viet Nam: primitive, peaceful, sedentary hill tribesmen. ...Emperor in 1908 at the age of two, and cried throughout the ceremony. Four years later, his overthrow by Sun Yat-sen marked the fall of the world's oldest empire. His life from then on was marked by three decades of royal fantasy, first as a virtual prisoner of the republican government in Peking's Forbidden City, later as "Emperor" of Manchuria and frail front for the Japanese occupation. Captured by the Russians in 1945, he was eventually handed over to the Chinese Communists who allowed him to spend his last years back among the gardens...
