Movies still are pretty much a national virus, and to people who really love them, "Citizen Kane" is the item to measure the others against. It's such a self-conscious work that every frame lectures the viewer on film and stagecraft both--and even though its technical precocity makes it something of an exhausting film to watch, you want to watch it over and over after it's finished. "Kane" is the object lesson in American movies--in itself, in legend, in its tradition. It's not the starting point, but the center around which everything else moves...

...nationwide flu picture is confused by the persistence of some A/Victoria virus left over from last winter's outbreaks and the current prevalence of A/Texas. Nonetheless, isolation of Russian flu virus has been confirmed not only at the three service academies but also in Wyoming, Colorado, Michigan and Texas, and unconfirmed reports of outbreaks are trick ling in from most of the other states...

Since the Russian flu virus strain was prevalent in 1947-57, many Americans over 25 have some if not substantial immunity. As a result, few if any of the academies' faculty members were among the victims. "It's one of the advantages of being middle-aged," said Dr. Richard S. Foster, the air academy's chief medical officer. How fast this new/old flu will spread among the population at large, however, is unpredictable. It could go on a nationwide rampage within the remaining weeks of winter, or spread slowly, person to person, until next fall...

...largest single consumer of rhesus monkeys in the U.S., as foreseen in the 1955 treaty, is the polio-vaccine testing program. Lederle Laboratories of Pearl River, N.Y., now the sole U.S. manufacturer of the vaccine, grows the Sabin attenuated virus strains in cultures of African green monkey kidney cells. Samples of each batch of vaccine (currently totaling about 25 million doses a year) are then injected into the brain cavities or spinal columns of 45 rhesus monkeys. After three weeks of clinical observation, the animals are "sacrificed"-killed humanely by an overdose of sodium pentothal-so that their nervous tissues...

...until 1933 that a virus was identified as the cause of flu and dubbed influenza A. In 1946-47 another form of A emerged, and about this time virologists working with electron microscopes made an important discovery. They found that the outer coat of each virus particle is studded with hundreds of protein spikes. There are two types: hemagglutinin, a biochemical glue that makes red cells clump together and helps the virus get into cells, and an enzyme called neuraminidase that dissolves the glue and helps the virus get out of cells. These spikes are also the antigenic proteins that...
