...said non to devaluation of the franc. His successor could hardly match the general's flair for making news-or, for that matter, his disdain for the press. Reported Paris Bureau Chief Rademaekers: "One covered De Gaulle from a distance-like a moon shot. Journalists invited to visit the Elysee Palace always entered by the servants' entrance. We still enter by the same door, but the mood and the attitude inside have noticeably changed." As TIME'S cover story suggests, Georges Pompidou, or any other aspirant to the 23rd presidency of France, may at least admit...

President Nixon responded to the news of De Gaulle's defeat by writing a letter of regret and repeating his invitation to the general to visit the U.S., now as a private citizen. Fortas acknowledged visiting the Wolfson farm and said that he "was present at a meeting of the Wolfson Family Foundation," but added: "I did not, of course, participate in any of Mr. Wolfson's business or legal affairs during that visit, nor have I done so at any time since I retired from law practice...

There are now more than 2,000,000 people with second homes, and they pack France's narrow country roads with their Peugeot 404s and R.16s. Many others take off to visit relatives in the provinces, for France is a nation that is pulling its young out of the country and into the cities. More than 350,000 Bretons, mostly young, have migrated to Paris, and in their off hours they gather in favorite Montparnasse bars and drink to Breizh Atao (Brittany...
