Aside from lovers and husbands, the only visitor to the house is the minister who comes to pray at Agnes's deathbed. Bergman admires the minister's recognition of the need for moral faith, and his sincerity and fervor; but his unfolding of a stern Calvinist credo becomes pathetic, particularly as he begins to cry, and tells the sisters that Agnes's faith was stronger than his own. When he leaves with his androgynous layers-out, we are made sharply aware that, for all its period trappings, this is a story about Western man caught in a post-Christian world...
...them and it still produces sparks. As for the theater, that too has its enduring endearing qualities. There are laments for the passing grandeur of the now tacky Broadway; butter and egg musicals, and Neil Simon comedies still pull in the theater parties. Save for the new nudity, the visitor might never have been away...
Aqua Sans systems have been adapted to existing facilities in Mount Rushmore's visitor center, a New York tugboat and a naval barracks at Annapolis, Md. They work well. By your own admission Lompoc is a "minimum security camp" designed for nonviolent inmates...
Woodcuts of the time show Dracula eating at a banquet table outdoors, surrounded by a large array of stakes on which bodies are speared. When a visitor to his court showed himself to be revolted by the resulting stench, Dracula jovially ordered the man himself to be impaled, but on an especially high stake, so he could not be offended by the smell of other bodies. When two emissaries of Sultan Mohammed II neglected to take off their turbans, explaining that such was the Turkish custom, Dracula had the turbans nailed to their heads. He spitted babies on their mothers...
