Beneath the enthusiasm evident all over China the visitor senses an almost palpable current of restraint and hesitancy-a whiff, perhaps, of the kind of fretful, nervous caution that pervaded Russia during the Stalin era. There is an echo of Stalinism in the prevalence of the cult of Mao, which overwhelms the visitor. The country seems slightly dazed, as if only recently emerged from shock therapy.
