...artists' collaborative known as the KNOWMAD Confederacy, "Map: Motion + Action = Place" is an installation work in the guise of an interactive arcade video game which purports to investigate "changing notions of national identity and belonging." True to arcade video game form, a steering wheel and acceleration pedal enable the visitor to navigate a desert landscape dotted by "nomadic tents" from which he must procure "sacred fruits" to save the KNOWMAD society. Based on Middle Eastern rug motifs, the three-dimensional interiors of the 36 tents are visually engaging and well-executed. Somewhere, there is a connection between the desert...

...Frank Gehry, the building makes little attempt externally to interact with its environment, strange given the emphasis one would expect to be placed on such a dialogue here on the rez. Things get both better and worse on the museum's inside. A spiral ramp draws the visitor artfully from the large atrium that dominates the entrance level of the structure down into the main exhibition spaces. Here, however, the museum's displays and those who view them almost manage to defeat the museum's entire enterprise...

McCain has preserved traits in adulthood that most people--and just about all important men--permit the world to beat out of them. For instance, a small boy's ability to manufacture excitement and adventure where not much exists. Every visitor to McCain's cabin in the Arizona desert has the same odd experience. At some point during the first morning, McCain waves off into the distance and announces that today "we'll take a trip down to Zebra Falls." ...white robe has wandered around this depressed coal region in Pennsylvania, where people tell stories about him. Children seem to believe he can walk in a snowstorm without getting wet and that his robe never gets dirty. One man phoned a local newspaper to say the visitor had put his palms on the hood of the man's car and fixed a problem that would have been too expensive for him to repair. The bearded man smiles at these stories and says he mostly tries to discourage them. Mostly. "There have been some real miracles," he says...
