...bigger potential problem is the loss of precise control over station orientation. Part of the reason for Atlantis's current visit is to install a new pair of solar arrays, just two of several such reflective wings that help supply the station with power. But collecting solar energy means being able to keep yourself pointed toward the sun, not so easy if you're drifting off center. The computers also help orient the station to avoid space debris and move into position for docking with the shuttle or arriving cargo ships. For now, the shuttle's thrusters and the station...

Just a couple of days after his rare visit to the Capitol, some signs are emerging that the Senate immigration reform bill he is pushing may not be dead just yet. Thursday night, a bipartisan coalition of Senators negotiated an agreement to bring the legislation back to the floor, possibly by next week. The sudden turnaround occurred after Bush shifted tactics, making an obvious overture to conservative critics by emphasizing the legislation's ability to strengthen the porous U.S./Mexico border...

When I went to visit Waldheim in 1994, he was ensconced in his opulent offices at the Austrian League for the United Nations - but he was still under siege. Freedom of Information Act requests had pried open the 1987 Washington report that put Waldheim on the Justice Department's "watch list." The document placed him in Banja Luka in the summer of 1942, when the Nazis had rounded up the city's Jews and the Wehrmacht was fighting an anti-partisan offensive in the Kozara Mountains to the north. Reprisal killings against civilians were part of the Germans' brutal efforts...

Reinventing Singapore I was shocked to see the cover depicting an American family with the heading "Singapore's New Look" [June 4]. It gives the impression that the country is losing its Asian identity and becoming more Western. Much as we welcome tourists and professionals to visit or make Singapore their home, some questions linger in the mind: What numbers of foreigners-by nationality, age and profession-are working in the country? Have they taken up citizenship or permanent-resident status? How many Singaporeans have emigrated since 2000? Obviously, some concern from the locals is expected. A follow-up report...

...outgoing prosecutor for the U.N. court dealing with war crimes in the former Yugoslavia says she has good reason to believe that her most elusive prey, former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic, may soon be in the hands of the court. Del Ponte announced last week, during a valedictory visit to the Serbian capital Belgrade, that she had received very positive signals from the new government with respect to handing over five war crimes suspects still at large. In contrast to the acrimony of many of her previous visits to Belgrade, she said this one went better than any since...
