Kohl's most endearing trait is his straight-forward, bluntly honest voice--one might surmise that after thirty years experience with school-age children, the author's gift for clearing out needless discourse has been honed to a razor's edge. Simple diction, while vital for pedantry, has its drawbacks in the modern non-fiction market: every once in a while Kohl's hand can be felt patting the reader on the head, as if recruiting another kindergartner into his throngs of supporters. Donald Margulies' recent play Collected Stories rests on the foundation of a popular dramatic scenario: the formation of an engaging, vital and sometimes volatile relationship between two working artists. What sets Collected Stories apart from the rest is that Margulies filters this often unwieldy theme through a completely engaging, funny and provocative story. ...timing was vital, since the story this week will be guided by Clinton's secretary Betty Currie, who alone is portrayed by the White House as too honorable to shade the truth, whose office has a peephole into the Oval Office, who is one of three White House staff members privy to the President's phone logs, and who has emerged as the silent and sturdy pivot for three big players: Clinton, Vernon Jordan and Lewinsky. Currie, whose stricken face as she left the grand jury became a national freeze-frame a month ago, is reportedly calmer now, not terrified...

...twist to the case that has Jovanovic?s lawyers crying foul, the State Supreme Court has allowed the prosecution to delete vital portions of the woman?s e-mail messages. Jovanovic?s supporters claim they contain mitigating details, and show she?d already had a series of similar, consensual encounters. Justice William Wetzel says the defense is not obliged to see the mails, under New York?s rape shield law.
