...anyone watching this movie for only the plot will be gravely disappointed, perhaps even bored: Altman feels for the audience intelligent enough to accept the vital added layers of atmosphere that allow one to imagine the rest of the city not shown on screen. Many scenes start from images reflected in mirrors, as if to remind us that at any given time we're voyeurs just happening to see part of the movie's world...

MOSCOW: In a nearly catastrophic accident, Mir spun wildly out of control today after a crew member accidentally disconnected a vital cable, sending the crew scurrying into the Soyuz escape capsule just in case. The blunder, which cut all power to the station's electricity, orientation, life support and communications systems, occurred while the crew was preparing to fix the station's power system, which was damaged after Mir collided with a cargo ship in June.
