Susan Ded is Hector's best friend, a college friend who calls him "darling" and has strong opinions, though love's treatment of her has made her opinions "less vivid." The story belonging to the Deds and the story belonging to Hector move along at roughly the same speed, and as Bill Ded hires prostitutes to call him dirty names, Hector loses weight; as Susan moves toward alcoholism, Hector is hospitalized...

...contains vivid accounts, based on individual case histories, of death's major causes, from accidents to Alzheimer's to AIDS. One of Nuland's case histories involves a drug addict and AIDS victim he calls Ishmael Garcia. With chilling clarity, the author describes Garcia's gradual and painful "descent into the valley of fever and incoherence" via pneumonia, meningitis and lymphoma of the brain. As he lay dying, Garcia was taking 14 experimental medications, none of which slowed what Nuland calls "a jet- propelled pestilence." ...will give just one vivid example of the opportunistic trend-chasing that the Ivy league has systematically cally rewarded with its ultimate honors. A prominent woman literature professor at Harvard obtained her present position as a devout disciple of Deride and Paul de Man, an affiliation that changed only in the late Eighties when it was revealed that de man was a Nazi sympathizer. For this and other reasons, deconstruction began to sink...

Tobias Wolff's subtle, vivid memoir, This Boy's Life, was converted into a one-track movie centered on the loutish, vicious behavior of Wolff's stepfather, played by Robert De Niro. Fried Green Tomatoes, released in 1991, was a masterpiece of artfully soft-edged propaganda, a regular Birth of a Nation of antimale bias: almost all the male characters were brutes or fools or slobs except for a mute, guardian black giant, who was a sort of eunuch figure, and a sainted brother who died an awful death when young and innocent, and a little...

Technically, "Sex and Zen" is a accomplished and quite beautiful. Deep-hued silk billows extravagantly around the suitable pulchritudinous actors in just about every scene. Peter Ngor's camera creates a luscious surface of vivid colors and careful compositions that does full justice to Raymond Lee's sets and art direction. However, the film's visual beauty and the amusing acrobatics in some of the scenes fail to distract one from the cruelty of the era the movie depicts. There is an extraordinarily disturbing scene where the prodigiously endowed and sadistic Kuen rapes and beats his wife. Some...
