Furthermore, everything is couched in vivid, passionate language, by turns profound and stirring, agonizing and impenetrable. At times, it acquires a poetic, almost musical tone; indeed, by the end, the play largely abandons meaning in favor of the pure beauty of words. But even through the middle of the play, the dense language poses no small challenge. The play consists of lengthy monologues--often delivered just a little too quickly--which leave one struggling to keep up. Revelations about the banality and fakeness of existence are liberally spiced with whimsical references and odd metaphors...
This show will take things much further, for specialists, no doubt, but especially for the ordinary viewer. There could be no more vivid introduction to the upper reaches of Chinese art, and this takes hold right at the beginning. No matter how many ritual vessels from the late Shang dynasty (13th to 11th centuries B.C.) you may have seen, the memory of them will pale beside the massive ting, or tripod pot, in the first room, with its swollen bronze belly and deeply incised decoration. "And then he gets stronger and stronger, and suddenly it all comes back!" When he's happy with the ways things are going, he lets the band know. "You make the music," he shouts. "I listen to it and adjust...
...into-wine question--don't depend on artificial intelligence. They could occur (and have occurred) to people who simply take the mind-as-machine idea seriously and ponder its implications. But the actual construction of a robot like Cog, or of a pandemonium machine, makes the hard questions more vivid. Materialist dismissals of the mind-body problem may seem forceful on paper, but, says McGinn, "you start to see the limits of a concept once it gets realized." With AI, the tenets of strict materialism are being realized--and found, by some at least, incapable of explaining certain parts...
