...really does feel good to be bad, or so I discovered last Friday night. While more dutiful undergrads raced to the MAC to grab that last Stairmaster or trudged home to cram for midterms, I lazily popped The Godfather (Vol. 1) into the Eliot Grille VCR/14" TV, and sat back to enjoy the ride. ...album, Tragic Kingdom, in Billboard's Top 10, fueled by a superb new single, Spiderwebs; Rancid, the terrific punk-ska band featured on this year's Lollapalooza tour; Sublime; and numerous ska-compilation CDs that showcase up-and-comers. Two fine ones worth seeking out: Ska the Third Wave Vol. 2, with songs by such acts as Mock Turtle Soup, and Roots, Branch and Stem-Living Tradition in Ska!, featuring the Blue Beats and others...

...under consideration here are very good. In particular, Michael's new CD, Older, is hypocritical and dreary. The singer has been rebelling against his teenybopper past as co-leader of Wham! for some time now (his last album, which attempted a more serious tone, was titled Listen Without Prejudice Vol. I), but on this new CD he is not only a rebel without a cause, he also lacks energy and wit. On the song Star People he actually sings "Star People/ counting your money till your soul turns green/ Star people/ counting the cost of your desire to be seen...
