...halls. More often than not the earth's major convulsions take place within a few hours of the first warning quiver. It was just such an instrument that Dr. Thomas A . Jaggar reported having perfected upon his arrival last week in California from his post at the government volcano observatory at Hilo, Hawaii (TIME, May 3). It was an earthquake annunciator, a simplified seismograph for installation in the cellars of private dwellings, with an indicator to be read upstairs. It would, he said-and his high standing as a scientist removed all doubt from the assertion-record earth shocks...
...Volcano (Bebe Daniels, Ricardo Cortez). The stage this week, as listed elsewhere, had its South Sea show with a restless volcano for shock effect. So too, the screen. The screen can, of course, do much better by a volcano than can the stage. The eruption in this picture is excellently emotional, if one has after hundreds of movies emotion left for natural disorders. The story is pretty feeble, with Miss Daniels playing the "native" girl and Mr. Cortez the handsome, clear-skinned lover. The volcano bursts all over the middle of the sweet sentiment and ends the picture vigorously enough...

Three main explosions took place, the first setting loose the water that had lain cradled in the crater since time immemorial, the third causing an appalling landslide as the crater walls were hurled down the mountain. It was Japan's first long dormant volcano to erupt since Mount Sakurajima in 1914. The semi-sacred Fujiyama has done nothing violent since...
...This man who may remind you of a pompous schoolmaster is Hiram Johnson. He used to be a rip-roaring Progressive Republican. He still votes with them, but he seems to be an extinct volcano. The old gentleman there, with a kindly face-no, not that one; he is Frederick Gillett, who used to be Speaker of the House and has now retired to the dignified bosom of the Senate as a reward for his long and faithful labor in the Republican cause. The other one farther back is Senator Cummins, who used to be a Progressive Republican...
...loaded with many of his treasures and sunk inexplicably in this volcanic lake. Last week Premier Mussolini ordered the Ministry of Public Instruction to take steps for the recovery of these galleys. Experts opined that the only feasible method will be to tunnel into the side of the extinct volcano of which the Lago di Nemi is the crater, and thus drain off the deep water which thwarted two previous attempts by divers and grapples...
