...Volt may make a small dent in America's dependence on imported oil, but that's all. Since 70% of U.S. electricity is made by burning natural gas or coal in power stations, the car basically swaps one fossil fuel for another. And because it's carrying a 400-lb. (180-kg) dead-weight battery, it may even wind up using more fossil fuel and costing more to run than a normal car - with no compensating reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Rebecca Lindland, a senior auto analyst for the research firm Global Insight, is a fan of both electric cars and GM's plug-in Volt. "This is not a George Jetson future," says Lindland. "This is ours." But that future is still a ways off. Lindland said that when she met with GM executives not long ago to talk about the Volt, she reminded them of one vexing question: The plug-in makers' assumption is that drivers will recharge their cars in the garage at home, where it shouldn't be too hard to find an electrical outlet...

Hymotion, owned by A123 Systems and based in Watertown, Mass., has at least one advantage over its competitors: The company is one of two finalists being considered by General Motors to produce the lithium-ion battery for the Chevy Volt, which is widely expected to be the first commercially available plug-in hybrid in the U.S. when it goes on sale in 2010. (GM says the Volt will be able to travel up to 40 miles in all-electric mode before switching over to its gas or ethanol-powered engine.) But there are at least half a dozen other companies...
