...overwhelmingly strong influences in black Rock and Roll. Foremost, of course, is Motown. For breadth of talent, monetary and technical resources, cross-cultural impact and sheer volume of sales, Berry Gordy's corporation is IT. In second place and trying harder is Atlantic, the parent company of the Stax-Volt labels. And all by himself, James Brown, the Culture-Hero Who Walks Like A Man, occupies a discrete, if not always discreet, position that for our purposes can be labeled number three...

With characteristic optimism and consummate salesmanship, Lawrence raised funds and began building a 100 million-volt cyclotron in 1940, despite warnings by theoretical physicists that complex relativistic considerations would make it unworkable. World War II halted the project and saved Lawrence from great embarrassment. But the postwar years brought another. Putting his prestige and influence in Washington to work, Lawrence overcame the objections of other scientists and won approval for the construction of a monstrous proton accelerator for converting nonfissionable uranium 238 into fission able plutonium, which could be used in nuclear weapons. This time, after three years and huge...

...Housing Costs Too Much" [June 7] expressed the problem in a concise manner. I wonder what the price of a new Chevrolet would be if G.M. had to make it with 15-in. wheels for New York and 16-in. wheels for Los Angeles or with a twelve-volt battery in Chicago and a six-volt battery in Philadelphia. I hope that more articles will educate the public to problems such as codes, rising labor costs, mortgage markets, land prices and many others faced by the builder today...

...sometimes known as Threskie, has had several leaves of absence, many of them accountable to a century-long feud between the Harvard Crimson and the Harvard Lampoon. It has been stolen twice this year already, and has just returned to its perch. Now Lampoon members are threatening a 125-volt battery to fry anyone who gets playful with their pet in the future...

...image-intensifier tube, a sturdy combination of the home TV screen and miniaturized space-age electronics. Focused sharply by the scope's front lens, the slightest flickers of light are directed against a chemical film, causing it to discharge electrons. Boosted along by a 15,000-volt electrostatic field, those electrons smack into a phosphorcoated screen whose light then jars loose still another flock of electrons. The process is repeated three times, and the high-voltage electron acceleration, or energy buildup, produces a progressively brighter image. Besides the light, the only other power source is a tiny built...
