...plot, which is totally predictable whenever it manages to make sense, shuttles Thomasine (Vonetta McGee) and Bushrod (Max Julien) from caper to caper with small regard for continuity. Yet, there are some nice, funny, affectionate moments between the two lead actors. She is always at him about something, like holding up their getaway from a bank robbery so she can snap a photograph. He is very wry, very careful about her, and although one can see the last ambush coming a long distance away, it is still a wrenching moment. ...African diplomat, where he is tested, cajoled and finally hired to hunt down the slavers. It is not so much Shaft's social consciousness that responds to the African call, or even his continuing concern over his bank account.
