SOUTH AFRICA'S invasion of Angola last Thursday reveals once again the Vorster regime's appalling contempt for human life. Over 500 civilian refugees from South West Africa (Namibia), a territory South Africa has ruled illegally since 1966, died at the hands of the South Africans...
Rather than assuming a leadership role in the struggle against apartheid, the Corporation has chosen to continue its indirect support of the Vorster government, once more affirming that Harvard places concern for profits ahead of concern for human lives. At the very least, the Corporation should cease to justify its decision on the basis of moral concern for the "tragic and deplorable situation" in south Africa. While an explanation in terms of financial pressures would be no more palatable, it would not be quite so insulting the community's intelligence...
...position between Kissinger's reluctance to pressure South Africa to abandon its apartheid policy and Carter's desire to place America openly on the side of black majority rule. White South Africans, particularly, feel that U.S. moral judgments are hypercritical and based on a double standard-an argument that helped Vorster win a huge majority in last fall's national elections. A case in point: Carter in Lagos criticized injustice in South Africa but made no mention of the fact that Nigeria is a tough military dictatorship; criminals are regularly executed every Saturday on the Lagos beach. As the Afrikaner newspaper Beeld put it: "Morality...
